Road Charging Scheme: Durham - Brief Summary (UK)

Road charging scheme (Durham), UK

Aims

To reduce congestion on the main shopping area (a narrow street up a hill running through the medieval centre).

Design

Cars that wish to use this street must now pay GB£2 (3 euro). The revenues are used to support a frequent bus service that goes up and down the hill to the city from outlying carparks.

Performance

Traffic in the street has fallen 85% and sales in the shops have increased.
